When it comes to dental implants, it is important to have strong jaw bone for the implant to bond properly. It is common for patients who have had missing teeth for prolonged periods of time to lose bone mass in the area of the missing teeth. Sometimes, bone loss is due to injury or infection. Even when an infected tooth is promptly removed, the infection may have diminished the jawbone. Without adequate levels of healthy, strong bone, an implant may not be as successful. However, with today’s surgical advancements, bone grafts and even sinus lift surgeries are available to correct years of bone loss or bone loss caused by an infection.
Bone used for bone grafts comes from a tissue bank or the patient. Usually, this type of bone is from the hip, tibia, or jaw. After a period of healing, the bone graft bonds to the patient’s jawbone, providing a stable environment for a dental implant. Sometimes a mesh membrane is placed between the patient’s bone and the bone graft to help promote bonding and healing.
Sinus lifts are sometimes necessary when upper teeth have been removed. The reason is that the roots of our upper teeth are either very close to or may intrude into the sinus cavity. Therefore, when an upper tooth is removed, it could leave only a thin layer of bone between the extraction site and the sinus cavity. To prevent sinus issues down the road, a sinus lift and bone graft are often necessary to raise the floor of the sinus cavity out of the way, making room for a dental implant. Adequate healing time is necessary following a sinus lift. Once the bone graft has bonded to the patient’s jawbone, you are ready for a dental implant to be placed.
Bone grafts may also benefit patients who wear dentures. Over time, dentures may become loose due to loss of jawbone. A bone graft allows the patient an opportunity to have restored the bone structure, enough for dentures to fit comfortably. Sometimes, patients who wear dentures prefer a stronger hold in which dental implants may be placed in multiple areas of the upper and lower jawbone, acting as anchors for the dentures.
Most patients that undergo bone grafts experience minimal discomfort and swelling. Dr. Renfroe and Dr. Conley will ensure you are briefed on what to expect post-operative and ensure you are aware of the necessary at home care following your bone graft or sinus lift surgery. Follow-up appointments are likely necessary to ensure healing and success of the procedure. At Wall Street Dentistry, we want to be sure patients are comfortable with their decision for dental care.
