What is a dental crown?
Dental crowns help restore teeth back to their normal shape and size. Crowns are sometimes made of both porcelain (outer layer) and metal (inside layer). There is also a non-metal option as well.
What is the purpose of a dental crown?
Crowns can be used for a variety of reasons including:
- Cover a brittle tooth that has too much decay beyond what a filling can repair
- Provide strength for a tooth following a root canal
- Final step in a dental implant procedure
- Cover a stained tooth that does not respond well to traditional whitening methods
- Cover and strengthen a fractured or broken tooth
What can I expect when getting a dental crown?
During the procedure, you are numb so that you do not feel any pain. Impressions are taken and sent to our dental lab where your crown will be custom-made. Then, the dentist removes any unhealthy portion of your tooth to prepare it for the dental crown.
Finally, a temporary crown is made, right in our office, and placed on your tooth. The temporary crown will stay in place until your permanent crown has been made. You will return for a second visit to have your crown permanently placed.
What to expect after a dental crown
Following the procedure, your newly crowned tooth will look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. No one will be able to tell that you have a crown. Caring for your teeth after a dental crown is easy, brush and floss as normal, and follow through with your routine checkups and cleanings.
