Fluoride is a mineral that helps fight tooth decay. It can be found in certain foods that we eat, as well as the most common source, our drinking water. Fluoride evokes many controversies among communities, concerned whether fluoride is indeed beneficial.
Myth: Adding fluoride to a community’s water system is not cost effective.
The fact is, fluoride has proven to save individuals money. According to the Centers for Disease Control, each year adding fluoride to the drinking system costs between 50 cents and a $1 per person (depending on the size of the city) but fluoride saves individuals about $38 in dental repairs annually.
Myth: Fluoride causes cancer.
Fluoride was first introduced into the water supply in 1945. Since then, nearly 50 independent studies of various populations have been conducted, none of which prove a link between cancer and fluoride usage.
Myth: Fluoride is not safe for babies or children.
According to the American Dental Association, it is perfectly safe to use water that contains fluoride to mix with your baby’s formula. However, too much fluoride can lead to fluorosis, which mostly affects esthetics that can easily be corrected. As a parent, if you have any questions or concerns about fluoride, you should discuss this with your child’s dentist.
Myth: Fluoride in our water system is like forcing people to ingest medicine.
Just to be clear, fluoride is not considered a medication in any shape or form. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that when consumed in moderation, promotes healthy teeth and bones. Many of our foods are fortified with other types of minerals that are beneficial to our health. For example, iodine is added to salt, vitamin D is added to milk, and folic acid is added to our store bought bread. Fluoride is no different; it is added to ensure we do not suffer from a deficiency of this valuable mineral.
